A Great Quest
August · MMXXVI

You're Invited

Welcome to Estonia, one of the world's smallest, most beautiful and digitally savvy nations. A former Soviet state, the country's history, architecture and culture are a blend of Nordic, Baltic, Russian and Germanic influences. It is where East meets West, and it is, from the perspective of your organisers, one of the most under-visited places in the world. We chose this location for this curation of people for that very reason. Our trip is a chance to get away, reset and meet exceptional people in a setting unlike any other. From the beach to the forest, to a Michelin-starred dining experience and a tour of the museum of legendary composer Arvo Pärt, this will be a gathering unlike any other.

We hope you will join us for 4 nights, August 3–7, at Schloss Fall with 30 wonderful people.

With warmth,
Devin Gilmartin & Ari Cagan
Schloss Fall

Schloss Fall sits on the Estonian coast some thirty kilometres west of Tallinn, perched above the Keila waterfall from which it takes its name. It was built between 1827 and 1833 for Count Alexander von Benckendorff, chief of the Imperial Russian gendarmerie and confidant of Tsar Nicholas I, as a summer residence overlooking the Baltic.

The castle was the first major commission of Andrei Stackenschneider, who would later become court architect to the Romanovs. He designed it in the English neo-Gothic mode then fashionable across Northern Europe, with its turrets, crenellations, and pointed arches, set within an English landscape park that runs to the cliffs above the falls.

Tsar Nicholas I was an early guest. The estate passed in time to Benckendorff's daughter, Princess Maria Volkonskaya, and remained in the family until the upheavals of the twentieth century. Restored in our own time, it now operates quietly as a small hotel and cultural site. For our days there it will be ours entirely.

The Four Castle Suites Each named for a figure central
to the castle's history.
Suite Stackenschneider
The architect. His first major work.
Suite Imperial
For Tsar Nicholas I, an early guest.
Suite Volkonski
Princess Maria, who inherited the estate. Balcony.
Suite Benckendorff
The patron. The reason the castle exists. Balcony.

Programme

Day i.
Arrival &
Welcome
Mon · 03 Aug
Schloss Fall

The afternoon is for arriving. A private coach brings the group from Tallinn, rooms are found, and there is time to walk the grounds and the cliffs above the waterfall before evening. As the light goes long, a welcome reception opens the gathering, followed by the opening dinner in the castle, the first of the long-table evenings.

Friends from Estonia are invited to join us for this first night, local voices from culture, design, and public life, so the days begin in the company of the place itself.

Day ii.
A Day in Tallinn
Tue · 04 Aug
Castle → Tallinn → Castle

The one day away from the coast. The coach runs east along the Baltic into the capital, and the day is given to Tallinn, its medieval heart and its digital present together. A historian-led walking tour of the Old Town, a UNESCO-listed Hanseatic quarter of merchant streets, guildhalls, and city walls, with a long lunch along the way.

A private visit to the Town Hall, the oldest in Northern Europe, on the medieval market square, and a reception at the office of the Mayor of Tallinn. A guided tour of Linnahall, the monumental Soviet-era hall on the harbour, built for the 1980 Olympics. And a visit to e-Residency, Estonia's pioneering programme of digital citizenship and the first of its kind in the world. The day closes with a Michelin-starred restaurant in the city before the late coach back to the castle.

Day iii.
A Day at the Spa
Wed · 05 Aug
Laulasmaa · Schloss Fall

A slower day, given to rest. The nearby spa at Laulasmaa is arranged for the group: saunas, steam, and cold plunges by the pine forest and the shore, with quiet hours to read or do nothing at all. For those who would rather be moving, the golf at Niitvälja or a forest walk with a Wanderlust guide are there for the taking.

In the evening, the gala dinner at the castle, the grandest of the nights, with toasts, a few words from invited Estonian guests, and music in the banquet hall.

Day iv.
The Waterfall & Arvo Pärt
Thu · 06 Aug
Schloss Fall · Laulasmaa

A day given to the place and its music. The morning unfolds slowly, with conversation and a guided walk through the English landscape park down to the Keila waterfall, for which the castle is named.

In the afternoon, a private visit to the Arvo Pärt Centre in the pine forest at Laulasmaa, the composer's archive and library set in the celebrated building by Nieto Sobejano, with time afterwards at the lookout over the Baltic. Dinner and a short recital back at the castle close the day.

Day v.
Farewells
Fri · 07 Aug
Schloss Fall

A long, unhurried final breakfast at Schloss Fall, with farewells exchanged at one's own pace. Toward midday, the group coach to Tallinn airport, with additional private transfers for those on other schedules. The gathering formally concludes at noon.

Map

Schloss Fall sits at the edge of one of the most beautiful stretches of the northern Estonian coast: a thirty-kilometre arc of pine forest, limestone cliffs, sand beaches, and the small cultural institutions that have made this corner of the country a destination in its own right. A short guide to what is within reach of the castle drive, for the hours between the programme.
